“A Theatre For All The People”
Mineral Point Municipal Theatre, Point Theatre, The Theater, The Mineral Point Opera House, MPOH … our beloved theater has been known by many names. No matter what it has been called, the venue has been a consistent and recognizable presence for more than a century in downtown Mineral Point.
Soon after it was dedicated in 1915, it quickly became the undisputed cultural center of southwest Wisconsin. It has been home to exuberant local high school and community theater group performances, beloved movies, and festive special events. Music of all genres has emanated from its walls, expanding the artistic footprint of a small town.
In the heart of downtown, the Opera House serves as an important economic driver, with patrons dining in local restaurants, staying in lodging establishments, and shopping in galleries and local businesses.
MPOH is a theatre for everyone! It’s a place to appreciate entertainment, to laugh, to be nostalgic and to revel in history. Most of all, the Opera House is a place to make memories with family and friends
Essential Partnerships
Taking care of this historic building requires partnership. A committed group of volunteers has worked tirelessly not only to help maintain and update the building, but also to offer a variety of creative programming that continues to grow and evolve to meet the tastes of audiences. It would also be impossible to maintain this building without the support of City of Mineral Point, our community, talented trades people, and benefactors!
The Encore Project: Setting The Stage For The Future
In 2008-2009, the Opera House’s interior received a critical interior restoration that saved the building. In 2020, the marquee was deemed a safety hazard and removed by the City. This most recognizable and historic feature of the theatre has been missing since that time.
Through the Encore Project, a new marquee will be built that honors both the Opera House’s history and the historic feeling of downtown but will be updated with technology for a new generation of service. Replacing the marquee will:
- Serve as a visible marker facing High Street.
- Provide promotional opportunities for shows.
- Protect the façade of the building.
At the same time, it has become imperative to address some essential building updates through the Encore Project such as restoration of windows and doors, roof repairs, and tuckpointing. These repairs are necessary to protect and preserve the building.
The Project Budget
The total combined cost of the marquee and necessary repairs is $400,000. Fortunately, some fundraising has already taken place. In 2024, we secured a federal grant of $100,000 from the National Park Service. Thanks to the City of Mineral Point, Mineral Point Community Foundation, a component of Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, and some generous lead donors, additional funds have been raised. However, a significant amount still needs to be raised through the Encore Project.
Timeline
With the benefit of lead gifts, a down payment has already been made towards the marquee construction. The installation is slated for Fall 2025. Because of their relationship with the marquee, the front doors and windows will also be restored in conjunction with this part of the project.
The additional building repairs will happen throughout 2025 and 2026 as budget allows.
