A young William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) struggles to write Romeo and Juliet while falling in love with Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), a noblewoman who secretly disguises herself as a man to act in his play. Their passionate affair inspires Shakespeare’s writing but is complicated by societal constraints and personal betrayals. As the play reaches the stage, Shakespeare is forced to confront the pain of their impossible love.
